NAIA women’s wrestling becomes a pioneer in collegiate sports by becoming an official championship sport in 2022.

Currently comprising roughly 46 to 53 programs, the NAIA utilizes an equivalency scholarship model that allows coaches to divide ten full scholarships into numerous partial awards.

Unlike some NCAA divisions, the NAIA maintains no official roster caps for the regular season, enabling elite programs to carry more than 40 athletes while smaller, developing teams may have fewer than ten. The research distinguishes the NAIA from the NCAA, NJCAA, and club levels by emphasizing its flexible recruiting rules, academic-athletic balance, and early adoption of the sport. While the sport has seen rapid growth over the last five years, recent data suggests participation has leveled off into a steady hover in the mid-30s for national championship qualifiers. Upcoming additions like Defiance College and Wilberforce University signal continued expansion as the organization maintains its competitive edge against traditional NCAA structures
